A real need. A considered solution.
Challenge
The liturgical calendar changes each day’s readings, prayers and saint, and the Catholic and Orthodox calendars give different answers for the same day. A static content list cannot express that; the user ends up working out what to read today by themselves.
Approach
The calendar is computed on device: for the Gregorian calendar, seasons derive from Easter, Ash Wednesday, Advent and Pentecost; for the Julian (Orthodox) calendar Easter comes from the Meeus algorithm with the 13-day shift applied. The lectionary and the daily office feed from it, so the app derives the right reading each day by itself.
Fifty screens in one Expo app: an audio Bible, a lectio divina library and builder, 25- and 40-day prayer journeys, a Bible-in-a-year plan, saint biographies, church fathers, stations of the cross, pilgrim mode with routes and a journal, sleep stories, a fasting tracker, a tithe calculator, reading groups and a spiritual-director chat. The home-screen widget reads the same data through a native bridge.
Result
English and Turkish; model calls go through a Cloudflare Worker proxy and data lives in Firebase. Daily office, Bible, saints, pilgrimage and community tools in one app; development continues.

Two calendars, on device
liturgicalCalendarService derives Gregorian seasons from Easter, Ash Wednesday, Advent and Pentecost; for Julian, julianEasterSunday implements the Meeus algorithm and applies the 13-day shift valid for 1900–2100. The Christmas season and special days are handled separately for each system.
Content as data
Under src/data, the office prayers, lectio library, saint biographies, church fathers, pilgrim routes, stations of the cross, cross references, sleep stories, 25- and 40-day challenges and reading plans are typed modules; screens read this data and content never mixes with code.
The service layer
More than thirty services: audio Bible, TTS, liturgical calendar, live liturgy, pilgrim mode, reading groups, discussion, friends, intentions, spiritual director, cloud backup and sync, notifications, widget sync and year review. Model calls go through a Cloudflare Worker proxy.
